When the ring led me back – A reflection on the Holy Spirit’s gentle guidance

15 Jan

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
John 14:26

The Watch That Almost Got Away

Some days, I lose more than just a watch. Recently, I misplaced my smartwatch and couldn’t remember where I had left it.

I had taken it off some days earlier, during a particularly busy time. The house was full and there were many moving parts. Somewhere in the middle of it all, I had taken my watch off and simply forgot where I placed it.

I searched for days.

Discovering the “Find My Watch” Feature

One morning, while searching yet again, it suddenly occurred to me that some watches can be found remotely. I opened the watch app on my phone and saw the “Find My Watch” feature.

I hesitated. My worry was simple: What if the watch battery was already dead? There would be no response.

Still, I tapped the button.

Almost immediately, I heard a faint ringing sound. I followed the sound through the house and found my watch tucked away, almost out of charge, but still alive enough to ring. It was still connected.

And in that moment, it struck me how much this mirrors the way the Holy Spirit works in our lives.

The Helper Within Us

The “find my watch” feature reminded me of the Holy Spirit within us. He helps us, reminds us when we’ve lost our way, guides us, and instructs us.

Just as my watch needed enough charge to respond, our awareness of the Holy Spirit depends on staying spiritually “connected” — through prayer, Scripture, obedience, and quiet attentiveness. When we remain in tune, He functions in diverse ways, leading us to paths that are life-giving and profitable.

Even when life becomes noisy, distracting, or overwhelming, the Holy Spirit does not abandon us. He nudges. He reminds. He gently calls us back into alignment.

Staying Connected

My watch rang because it was still connected. In the same way, the Spirit of God within us is always ready to guide us back, even when we feel lost or distracted.

Staying connected to God is not about striving, but about remaining attentive to the Spirit who is already present within us.

May we stay charged.
May we remain in tune.
And may we respond when the Spirit gently calls us back.

Reflective Question

Where is God gently calling you back today? Are you listening for His reminder?
